Turning inspiration into instruction

An expert group of professionals and artists, the Northern Plains Dance Summer Dance Intensive guest faculty facilitates a valuable learning experience for all ages. Combining a mastery of skill and technique, they lead with a genuine passion for dance and guide classes for the well-being of the students, positioning them to succeed.

Broaden Your Dance Experience

Northern Plains Dance’s annual Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) is is designed to cultivate well-trained artists. Daily in ballet technique provide a strong foundation in classical training while topics like modern, contemporary, jazz, variations, injury prevention and yoga are also an integral part of the curriculum to develop well-rounded dancers.

Participants in NPD’s SDI can have the experience of being in a professional company by electing to work with faculty in the creation of a new piece of choreography culminating in a performance at the annual Rooftop event on August 15.

Information

NPD’s Summer Dance Intensive offers a comprehensive program focused on increasing technical abilities for each student. The SDI is built for all dancers whether they wish to pursue a career in professional dance or increase their knowledge in ballet. For dancers ages 12 and up with at least 2 years of dance experience, daily ballet classes are supplimented with energetic and informative topics from Injury Prevention to Contemporary dance.

Take your training to the next level

The skills you learn at Northern Plains Dance’s Summer Dance Intensive will give you a leg up when classes and auditions come around in the fall. Classes and activities are held at Northern Plains Dance studios in Bismarck, ND, including up to 6 hours of instruction per day. All dance spaces have sprung floors with professional-quality dance surfaces.

Betsy Lucas

Betsy Lucas is currently a dancer in her 14th season with Nevada Ballet Theatre. Originally from Hillsboro, Oregon, Betsy was accepted into Oregon Ballet Theatre’s pre-professional program in 2008 under the direction of Damara Bennett. She joined Nevada Ballet Theatre in 2010 under the direction of James Canfield, and has danced under the direction of Roy Kaiser since 2017. Her repertoire with NBT includes lead roles in several full-length classics, including “Clara” in NBT’s production of The Nutcracker, choreographed by James Canfield, “Alice” in Septime Webre’s Alice (In Wonderland), “Dorothy” in Septime Webre’s OZ, “Svetlana” in Ben Stevenson’s Dracula, “Russian Girl” principal in Balanchine’s  Serenade, (Soloist Russian Girl), and “1st movement” Principal in Balachine’s Western Symphony.

Betsy has spent two summers with Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance in Asheville NC, under the direction of Heather Maloy. With Terpsicorps, she has danced dramatic leading roles such as “Calpurnia” in Cleopatra in 2023 and the young “Italian Girl” in Vampyre in 2022. 

Betsy is also one of the original company artists with Ballet 120. Since its inception in 2018, Betsy has premiered in several Ballet 120 short films, including Tactility, Purple Sunset, Full Circle  and Duet. One of Betsy’s favorite Ballet 120 moments was performing Purple Sunset live at the 2020 composer showcase held at Myron’s Cabaret Jazz at The Smith Center.

 Other career highlights include: performing a featured role at the 2018 Capezio Award show, dancing in a film project by Ann Marie DeAngelo featuring the powerhouse duet “Stay With Me”, participating in the Palm Desert Choreography festival in 2022 & 2023. She is also honored to have received coaching from world renowned Ballerina Cynthia Gregory.

 When not performing, Betsy designs and fabricates her own line of dance wear, Style on Pointe, as well as teaching at various dance studios. She takes great pride in her succulent collection and enjoys cuddling with her rescue shepherd-mix, Molly.

 

 

Noëlle Davé

Noëlle Davé, a South Carolina native, graduated from East Carolina University with a BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography. She is a freelance movement artist, choreographer, and educator currently based in New York City. During her time at ECU, she had the opportunity to perform in repertory piece, Standing in Tears, staged by Koresh Dance company members, as well as pieces by David Ingram, Danielle Sheather, Michel Kouakou, John Dixon, Tommi Galaska, Teal Darkenwald, Micah Geyer, and Joe Cotler. Upon graduation, she was a featured soloist in BalaSole Dance Company’s 2018 NYC season where she performed her work, Time, at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre in New York. She then joined gloATL at the end of 2018 in Atlanta, GA as a moving artist under Lauri Stallings. She has had the opportunity to be a part of Stallings’ work, Supple Means of Connection, in a six-week residency at the High Museum of Art as well as the Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy. Noëlle has also been a dancer with Britt Fishel & Artists since 2020, through which she got to perform REDACT at the Florence Biennale for a round two at the end of 2021. She was also featured in film, allowed|aloud, that was part of MashUp Contemporary Dance Company’s IWD Festival. Noëlle has had the opportunity to complete a residency under David Ingram with Fort Wayne Ballet where she performed in Fort Wayne Ballet, Too! She is currently a dancer with Culpdid Dance Company and is traveling to perform, teach, and choreograph. Noëlle loves to take on innovative learning opportunities to grow in her artistry and explore new ways of thinking and moving.

Carly Schaub

Carly Schaub is a dance artist residing in Salt Lake City and teaches Ballet, Modern Dance/Contemporary, Early Court Dance and Screendance. She works as an adjunct faculty member at Westminster University, and Salt Lake Community College and is on faculty at Wasatch Arts Center in addition to teaching Dance for Parkinson’s for Grey Matters. She has helped direct Westminster Dance Company for four years and with the help of the wonderful staff and community directed Glint, One-Shot, Unfurl, and co-choreographed evening length Invisible Cities, based on the novel by Italio Calvino with Westminster Dance Chair, Meghan Wall.  Excerpts of which were chosen at the 2024 ACDA Northwest Region for the Gala.  

 

Carly also serves as President of Deseret Experimental Opera (DEXO) and has over the years has helped produce/choreograph/direct many different shows and in 2023 solo choregraphed and conceptualized Confluence to Salt Dust with Salt Lake Ballet Cooperative. She is a regular teacher at Salt Lake Ballet Cooperative has also more recently taught summer intensives at Cache Valley Civic Ballet.

 

Carly completed her M.F.A. at the University of Utah in Modern Dance with Screendance Certification and a B.F.A. in Theatre and Dance from the University of Wyoming. Before attending graduate school, Carly danced, choreographed and served as the Education Coordinator at Northern Plains Dance in Bismarck, ND which led her all over the state performing and guest teaching with North Dakota Ballet and Red River Dance and choreographing numerous musicals for Sleepy Hollow Summer Theatre and Bismarck State College Theatre. 

 

frequently asked questions

What should by child wear for class?

SDI students should come prepared for class in any style of dance. Extra leotards, shoes, and tights are encouraged. Students are required to have ballet shoes (and pointe shoes if applicable.) Jazz and character shoes are not required but are encouraged. Hair should be secured in a bun with a hairnet unless otherwise specified.

How will my child be placed in a level?

The first class on Monday morning serves as a placement class for SDI. Placement in Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced classes will be posted Monday afternoon.
