Northern Plains Dance is inviting visual artists to submit their work for consideration as part of Dance+, our annual celebration of original dance, music, and visual art.

Each year, choreographers from around the country, along with NPD faculty, create brand-new contemporary and modern dance works for our students. Every choreographer is paired with a visual artist whose style complements the piece they are creating.

Selected artists will create a new, original work of art inspired by the choreographer’s vision, music, movement, or other creative influences. Artists are encouraged to bring their own perspective and artistic voice to the collaboration—the goal is not simply to illustrate the choreography, but to create a companion work that grows from the same ideas and inspiration.

The finished artwork becomes part of the performance itself, appearing as a projected backdrop on stage during Dance+. The original artwork will also be displayed in the lobby of the Belle Mehus Auditorium during the February 19–20, 2027 performances and made available for purchase by the public.

How It Works

Complete the form below to let us know you are interested and provide your general availability. Please upload several examples of your artwork so choreographers can get a feel for your style and determine which artist may be the best fit for their work.

Once artists and choreographers are paired, we ask participating artists to attend one or two rehearsals virtually when possible. Seeing the choreography in progress gives artists an opportunity to experience the movement, music, and overall tone of the piece before developing their artwork.

Submissions for consideration close November 15.

Selected artwork must be completed and photographed by February 6, 2027, so it can be prepared for projection during the performance.

Artwork Guidelines

The physical size of the finished artwork is up to the artist; however, because the image will be projected on stage, artwork should be created in a 16:9 ratio whenever possible for the best display.

Artwork created for Dance+ will be offered for sale during the performances. Historically, pieces priced under $350 tend to sell best, and artists are encouraged to keep this in mind when determining the scope, materials, and price of their work.

Northern Plains Dance will split the proceeds from any artwork sold with the artist.

NPD is also seeking funding to provide each participating visual artist with a stipend for the creation of the work. When funding is available, this stipend is typically $100 per artist.

Each participating visual artist will also receive one complimentary ticket to Dance+.

Artists do not need to live in the Bismarck-Mandan area to participate. Northern Plains Dance can help coordinate transportation of artwork created outside the area; however, artists are responsible for any shipping costs that may be required.

Important Dates

• November 15: Artist submissions close

• February 6, 2027: Finished artwork must be completed and photographed

• February 19–20, 2027: Dance+ performances at the Belle Mehus Auditorium
